Dear Friend:

My name is Glen P. Mayes II and I am the outgoing Chair for the Komen Austin Young Professionals Council (YPC).  Over the holiday, I had the opportunity to look back at the wonderful things our group accomplished in its inaugural year.  Together, we worked on several events, including a sunset cruise down Lake Austin, socials at Third Base, District 301, and Red’s Porch to raise awareness and funds for the Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.  The year ended with a bang with a team party at Fado’s followed by the 11th Annual Komen Austin Race for the Cure, which was truly a life-changing experience for all involved.  We are proud to say that in our first year, YPC raised more than $7,500 for Komen Austin!

For those of you who don’t know about YPC, we are a group of passionate young professionals who dedicate a year of service to the Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  We are now recruiting for 2011 and are looking for 50 passionate men and women who are young professionals (ages 21-40) to help move the Komen Austin mission forward.  There are several new components this year including an educational seminar, volunteer week, Dine Out for the Cure and so much more!

If this sounds like you, please fill out the YPC application and send it in before the December 3rd deadline to ypckomenaustin@gmail.com.  New members will be selected the week of December 13th.  The membership fee is $50 and includes a YPC T-Shirt, untimed registration for the 2011 Komen Austin Race for the Cure (YPC Komen Austin team), and a donation to the Affiliate.

Please visit us online at www.komenaustin.org/ypc for more details.  For questions or comments, please email ypckomenaustin@gmail.com or call 512-473-0900.

We hope you will join our fight against breast cancer!

Sincerely,

Glen P. Mayes II
YPC Chair

Dear Editor, The story titled “Cash Adds Up in Austin School Board Race” contained irresponsible errors. Voters deserve a higher ethical standard from the Statesman. The reporter absurdly misquoted me stating that I believe taxes are “wrong”. I clearly said RAISING property taxes is the wrong solution for current AISD problems. The poor journalism continued by misrepresenting that my campaign accepted contributions from Campaign for Liberty, a national Tea Party organization known to fund pro-war candidates. I am anti-war, I have never voted Republican, and would not be associated with such groups. As any reader can see, the reporter has twisted the name of one of my donors to fit her preconceived storyline. While my opponent accepts cash from developers, my next campaign finance report will show that I have raised over $16,000 from the Austin community. The innovative platform I bring to the race puts the children first, not special interests. Glen P. Mayes II Candidate, AISD Place 6 www.glenmayes.com
